Hi friends! January is flying by, and so are a lot of new year’s resolutions. Eeek! Sadly, it is sadly true. By January 17th most people have failed their new year’s resolutions or goals and have gone back to their old ways. 2019 doesn’t have to be that year. I’m also a firm believer there’s no need to wait for January 1st to focus or re-focus on new goals. So today, I am sharing six tips to crush your goals, plus my goals for 2019 and how I plan to crush them.

The tips below are all based on my personal experience and what has worked for me. When I look back on the big goals I have achieved there are common threads.

How to Crush Your Goals

Reflection.

Before you set goals, it is so important to take a step back and think about what served you in the past year and what areas of your life need help or more attention. If you need a little inspiration, check out my 2018 reflection from earlier this month.

Be honest and focus your needs,

when you come up with your goals. I have struggled with comparing myself to others or setting goals based on where other people (with completely different circumstances) are in their lives. Don’t do that! Remember that everyone is dealt a different stack of cards and your journey is unique. Your goals should compliment that, and if they do, you’ll feel much more motivated to crush them.

Be real.

Now that you have an idea of what goals you want to accomplish, make sure they are realistic and achieves level for the next year.

For example, a couple years ago I knew I wanted to boost my running to be able to run a marathon in the following year. So, I made a goal to run 550 miles in one year.

Boil it down!

It’s great to have big goals or dreams, but make sure you determine how that boils down to monthly and weekly goals.

Using my same running goal, I determined that my monthly goal was to run 46 miles and my weekly goal was to run 11 miles.

Scheduling and tracking go hand in hand.

These are the best ways to hold yourself accountable and stay on top of your goals. At the beginning of each month I carve out time to write out my work, life and blog schedule. Then, at the beginning of each week I update my schedule and determine when I have time to fit in my various goals. I also use my planner to write notes and track my goals as the weeks and months go on.

For my running goal, I would schedule out my runs. Some weeks I could only fit in two 5.5 mile runs, other weeks I had smaller windows of availability and ran four times. Of course there were also weeks I was on vacation or got sick. That leads me to my final tip…

Give yourself a break!

Do not expect yourself to operate like a battery-operated robot 24/7. We all need a break here and there, some of us more than others, some of less. There will be weeks or seasons of our life when it feels extra hard to get things done. Remember that is normal. When you need a break, give yourself that time off and enjoy it fully. Don’t feel bad about it!

It has definitely taken me a lot of trial and error to figure out that these are the things that I need in place to crush my goals. There have been plenty of times where I felt like a hamster on a wheel and needed to take a step back and reassess. But now, with these steps figured out, I feel like I have much more control over my goals.

Hopefully, these tips are helpful for you too! I also love hearing about other people’s goals and plans, though I personally have shied away from sharing mine. I am letting go of that fear of judgement. I also want to focus on maintaining this blog as an authentic reflection of who I am and share more about myself with you all. So, for the first time, I thought I would share my goals with you all. Here they are:

My 2019 Goals

  • Save money for a house.  This is a shared goal for Will and I. We each have a set amount of money we are trying to save this year and each month.
  • More structure and routine.  This is a broad goal, but if you read my 2018 reflection, then you know why! By default, I operate on a very random schedule with so many different aspects of my life and it can over complicate things. I am talking about going to different grocery stores each week and driving different routes to the same location. I didn’t realize this was odd until a few years ago – ha!! I also wastes some of my mental energy! So, this year I want to streamline a few things. Currently, I have started with having a set bed time and I have a few other things I want to implement over the next year, like a more set morning routine. Am I the only one who operates in a similar way!? If you have any tips, let me know!
  • Home improvements. We want to replace our carpet with hardwood or laminate floors throughout our place. I would also like to paint a couple rooms. These projects we will plan out during the months we know we will be around the most.
  • Make more time for workouts. Working from home makes it hard for me to shut work off and as a result I started working out less at the end of 2018. This year, I have a goal to attend 8 Orangetheory classes each month. That works out to roughly 2 per week, and I schedule them out a week in advance.
  • Goodbye, Diet Coke. Before my birthday in October, I want to stop drinking Diet Coke at home and decrease my daily caffeine intake. I have a plan to slowly ween myself off but I’d love to hear any advice on this front!
  • Deep clean and de-clutter our home. Where do I begin on this!? This goal consists of several things I want to clean out over the next year. I am picking something to focus on each month, including the linen closet, my clothes, electronics and items to donate or post on Craigslist.

5 Wedding Planning Tips for Every Bride to Be

Will and I got engaged on April 2. That means we are now eleven weeks into planning our wedding and (WHOA!) it has been a roller coaster ride so far. But, I hear this is only the beginning! So today I would like to share an update on the planning progress I have made so far and share my top five most helpful wedding planning tips for my fellow brides-to-be.

The Update

So far, I have gotten a handful of things locked down. We have a venue for the ceremony and reception. Our venue, the Goodstone Inn, also includes catering so this was sort of a three-in-one decision. This also means we are locked in to get married on April 28, 2018 (eeek! :-)). We have also secured a photographer – Jof Panlaqui, aka Joffoto – and we are super excited to be working with him.

This past weekend I went wedding dress shopping with my mom, and we found a perfect dress! I’m quite excited about it because my dress will incorporate lace from my grandmother’s wedding dress, which was also on my mom’s dress and I’ll get to wear the veil my late grandomother made for my mom. I was named after my grandmother, so it means a lot to me to have her be a part of my wedding day.

In addition to these big things, we have drafted our guest list, chosen our wedding party, made some decisions on the timing/agenda for our big day and have come close to solidifying our band. Outstanding items for us to figure out include a florist, cake/dessert, our send off, specialized signs, our officiant, stationery, our hashtag and the list goes on and on!!

The Wedding Planning Tips

  1. Prioritize!  Before you book or buy anything, think about what’s most important to you. A lot of timelines will advise you to book things in a certain order but remember – timelines are guidelines! If something is “the most important thing” for you, then book it first and let that be the foundation for your other plans.
  2. Pick a theme that’s true to you and your fiancé.  You’re planning a BIG day that revolves around the two of you. Avoid creating a false personality for your wedding. Think about both of your styles at the very beginning and pinpointing an authentic theme. This will help with so many decisions along the way. You may like many different styles, decor and ambiances, but if you’re indecisive think about think about which element matches your identity best. Ideally guests will come to the wedding and think, “Oh! This is so them!”
  3. Brainstorm!  Whether it’s Pinterest or bridal magazines, dive into a resource that will get you thinking creatively. Save anything you like for plans that you still need to solidify. There are great websites too that can help you think about fun personal touches you can add to your wedding. Southern Weddings, which a friend recommended to me (thanks Emily!), has amazing profiles of real weddings. There are tons of great resources out there though. Check them out, find out what you like and maintain a way of organizing your creative brainstorming sessions so that you can easily find the information later on.
  4. Take a break!  I try to have a couple days each week when I “forget” about the wedding planning. This helps prevent burnout and maintains the element of fun. There’s no right or wrong cadence for breaks. It is important to have some time away from the wedding plans throughout the process. Some people want to wait on the wedding planning and have a break for a few weeks once they get engaged, while others (like me) want to dive right in,  get a few things solidified and then take a break. Think about what’s most realistic for you and have your fiancé hold you accountable (he/she will probably enjoy distracting you from it!!).
  5. Expect to feel overwhelmed.  At some point (if not several times) you’ll get overwhelmed and that is 100% normal. There’s a learning curve with wedding planning and SO many different things to figure out. Just work through the overwhelming feelings and remember why you’re planning in the first place. This is an exciting time, so have fun and enjoy the crazy ride that is wedding planning!

Making 2017 Plans with my Erin Condren Planner

What if I told you you’re 42% more likely to acheive your New Year’s resolutions if you wrote them down?

Well this is true, according to a recent study. In fact, if you are serious about acheiving your 2017 resolutions or goals, I’d encourage you to get a planner and write down different sub-goals or supporting goals on your calendar that will lead to your acheivement.

During the later half of last year when I was job searching, I got into a weekly rhythm of looking at my week or weeks ahead, creating to-do lists and writing down goals or plans. I began doing this at the beginning of the week and realized just how helpful that time was in keeping myself focused on the tasks I wanted to accomplish.

As a part of this routine, I wrote down my to-dos, reminders, events, etc. in an agenda I got from Target. While this agenda worked fine and had the main layout one needs in an agenda, I started thinking last month about getting a fancier 2017 agenda to help me continue this planning routine into the New Year.

So, of course, I dove into a blackhole of internet research for hundreds of planners and agendas. It was really annoying to me that so many agendas started in August 2016 and continued to December 2017. I mean I am not the only person who is not in school that uses a planner, right? And then, these companies are making agendas that end in December.. so wouldn’t they also make ones that start in January? Anyway, I digress. I finally decided on getting the Erin Condren LifePlanner™.

I really liked the design of the LifePlanner, the different layouts and how customizable it was. For my planner, I chose the 12-month calendar and the “in bloom gold metallic” design for the front/back cover. Then, I chose the vertical layout (pictured below) with the colorful theme. I also chose to add-on a to-do list dashboard that snaps into my planner. The great thing about this dashboard is that it can be moved to a different page of your planner and can be easily reused throughout the year because you use wet erase (or dry erase) markers on it.

Overall, I am enjoying this planner so far and would recommend it to anyone. The biggest downside is the price, which is high compared to traditional planners, especially if you start adding several accessories for the planner to your cart. However, if getting a stylish and personalized planner will entice you to use your planner regularly and keep you focused on the things you want to accomplish, then it is definitely worth it in my mind. The planner comes with a lot of stickers, as well. I’m not sure how much I’ll actually end up using them, but I know that might be a big plus for some. Erin Condren also has tons of office accessories, notebooks and other planners for specific things like making lesson plans for school or wedding planning.

In general, I just find it so refreshing to write things down on paper. Electronic calendars can definitely be useful, but there’s something about writing a goal down that makes it stick. If you have a favorite planner, I’d love to hear about it.
