The Scoop on Formulate

How it works

The first step to get “good hair day” status is to take Formulate’s quiz. The quiz is where customization begins! It is your opportunity to share your hair type, needs and improvements you would like to see with your hair. Formulate’s quiz touches on every detail from length and color to strength and hydration needs. The last step of the quiz is picking out the scent – probably the hardest part for me because there were so many awesome choices! Once the quiz is done, your Formulate profile is complete. Here’s what mine looks like.

If you want to see what the possibilities are for your hair in the hands of Formulate, take their quiz

Hello.. Good Hair Day? Is that you?

Formulate arrived in the mail after a few days. The packaging is sleek, simple and functional. The pump is a game changer as well! The first time I tried Formulate, something was off with the formula. I was one of the first people to try the product so I wasn’t shocked. What surprised though, was the Formulate team. They genuinely wanted to help me find the right formula.

My hair is very fine, color-treated and I have several hair goals. I guess you could call me a little high maintenance! But despite of that, Formulate kept working with me until I got the right formula. And let me tell you, my good hair days are no longer rare occurrences!

The Pros

Just as they did with me, the Formulate team promises to work with you to adjust your ingredients and ship you the new formula – free of charge. Customer service is everything and I can confidently tell you Formulate is top notch on that front!

Before using Formulate, my scalp was oily and I was constantly battling build-up of dry shampoo – one of my favorite hair care products! I also had heat damage on the ends of my hair, resulting in lots of split ends. Thankfully, I no longer have those problems with my customized shampoo and conditioner.

My hair is the healthiest it has been is several years. It is stronger, more hydrated, less frizzy and my hair color “stays” longer. My scalp is healthier, too. My nighttime routine of washing my hair twice a week is the same, but I am using less dry shampoo, which ultimately means more money in the bank!

In addition to helping me meet my hair goals and achieve “good hair day” status, one of my favorite things about Formulate is that it is good for the environment. Their cruelty-free formula doesn’t contain preservatives, sulfates or parabens that can be harmful our planet Earth. The formula also contains less water than most shampoos and conditioners.

The Cons

You have to stay committed to Formulate and be patient to get see the full result. It can take a few times for your hair to fully let go of the old products you were using.  Since I only wash my hair two times a week, it took me a while, plus I didn’t get the best formula for me right away.

The price of for their customized shampoo and conditioner is also a little high for me, at $39 for the pair. However, now that I am spending less money on dry shampoo and have seen improvement in my hair, I can say it is definitely worth the price!

Bring on the Good Hair Days!

I am SO glad I stuck with Formulate and found a customized formula that fits my hair needs. It really has been a game-changer!

5 Summer Skincare Tips for Healthy, Nourished Skin

5 Simple Skincare Tips for Healthy Summer Skin

Hi friends! I am back from our beach weekend with the summer skincare tips I have learned over the years to maintain and achieve healthy, nourished skin. Summer is the time to show some skin and bring out your swimsuits, shorts and tank tops. With all the extra skin we show in the summer, our skin can turn into our best or worse accessory. A cute summer tank with shorts does not look as attractive if your skin is dried out and neglected.

I know from experience and I have made some mistakes when it comes to my skincare routine and products. So, today I am sharing the five simple ways I take care of my skin and maintain a youthful glow during the summer.

5 Summer Skincare Tips for Healthy, Nourished Skin - Sarah Camille's Scoop - SCsScoop.com

Summer Skincare Tips

#1 – Switch to Organic Skincare

I recently started making the switch to organic skincare, and have already seen what a difference good quality, natural products makes. When it comes to skincare, you get what you pay for. Cheap, generic skincare products that are readily available at the drugstore are usually full of inexpensive chemicals that do nothing to nourish your skin at best, or can outright damage your skin at worst.

With organic skincare, you can rest easy knowing the products you put on your skin will gently nourish and nurture your skin, making it healthy, soft and supple—perfect for flaunting at the beach!

For healthy, glowing, summer-ready skin, organic beauty products from a reputable brand, like Well Within Beauty can transform your skin. Well Within Beauty offers a huge range of essential skincare products made from the finest natural and organic ingredients. Their selection includes makeup remover, cleansers and an eye firming serum.

#2 – Moisturize Daily

Warmer days and increased sun exposure can wreak havoc on your skin and cause your oil glands to go into overdrive. You may experience oilier skin during the summer, which may tempt you to skip using moisturizer. Don’t do that! Just because your skin is oily does not mean it is properly moisturized. In fact, keeping your skin adequately hydrated actually helps to manage your natural oil production.

The key is to find a lightweight moisturizer that feels comfortable on your skin during the hot summer months. As I have mentioned before, I use almond oil year-round. It feels light, absorbs really quickly and it works wonders on my skin. If using a moisturizing oil doesn’t suit you, avoid thick creams and lotions that can make your skin feel smothered and sweaty in the summer and go for a gel moisturizer. You can also try pat on multiple layers of a hydrating toner.

#3 – Nourish Your Skin from Within

What you put into your body affects the condition of your skin just as much as what you put on it. Nourish your skin from within by taking nutritional supplements, which Well Within Beauty also offers. Supplements packed with essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants protect your skin cells from free radical damage and boost skin cell renewal for a healthy, youthful glow.

Eating fruits and vegetables is great way to nourish your skin as well. Tomatoes are one of my favorite things to eat for my skin, especially in the summer. There is lycopene in tomatoes, which provides natural skin protection by defending your skin from UV radiation. Studies also show that the ingredients in tomatoes help delay wrinkling and keep your skin looking young.

#4 – Exfoliate Gently

Regular exfoliation helps your skin shed dead cells faster, revealing fresh new radiant skin underneath. For a youthful summer glow, exfoliate regularly with a gentle yet effective chemical exfoliator, with AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) or BHA (beta hydroxy acid). About three times a week, I use Dr. Brandt’s Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant, which has AHA, jojoba oil, aloe vera and a few other magical ingredients!

Stay away from harsh physical scrubs that can rub your skin raw and cause it to become sensitized or reactive. Treat your skin like you would a newborn baby—with tender, loving care instead of rough scrubbing and rubbing. A lot of facial and body scrubs contain overly harsh physical exfoliators like crushed walnut shells that can damage your skin, or microbeads that are harmful to the environment when washed off.

#5 – Never Skip Sunscreen

My last tip is kind of a no-brainer. You should never, ever skip sunscreen during the summer when the sun’s rays are strongest. You should actually wear sunscreen every day, no matter what the weather, because the sun’s UV rays are so powerful that they can penetrate through clouds, glass and windows. Sun protection is especially important during the summer when people tend to wear lighter clothes that expose more skin.

So far this summer, my favorite sunscreen is by COOLA. I use the one pictured above on my face. It has a smooth non-greasy feeling and a lovely, light tea scent. Be sure to choose a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection and an SPF of at least 30, and wear enough of it to cover all exposed areas of your face and body.  On work days, when I’m not directly in the sun, I use my go-to tinted moisturizer, which is SPF 20.

Hopefully these summer skincare tips will help you discover more nourished and healthy skin this season! Remember that exercising a consistent skincare routine is also key to maintaining healthy skin.

I would love to hear how you take care of you skin during the summer. Do you use organic skincare products or take supplements to improve your skin? Share your favorite skincare products or summer skincare tips in the comments.

The Best Product to Set Makeup in the Summer

The Best Beauty Product for Setting Makeup in the Summertime

Summer is here, and while that means lots of time in the sun and hanging outside, it also means… SWEAT happens! I hate being sweaty, and since I’m assuming most of my readers do too, I am sharing the beauty product I use to prevent makeup from melting (or sweating) off my face.

I’ve shared with you my favorite tinted moisturizer foundation, and this beauty secret is from the same brand – Laura Mercier. It’s their Translucent Loose Setting Powder.

Why it rocks…

This stuff is seriously magic. I have noticed over the years, that it is especially effective in the summertime. While that dewy look can be attractive on your tanned skin, there’s a fine line between dewy and sweaty. Hopefully you do not know this from experience, like I do (ugh)! This powder sets your face and continually absorbs oils, leaving your skin looking matte, even on crazy humid days. I remember getting in the car after walking several blocks in D.C. on a hot, August day. I was in work clothes and I felt sticky all over. But to my surprise, I pulled the visor down and my makeup was exactly where I had put it on my face that morning. And somehow, I didn’t look sweaty. That’s how awesome this stuff is!

How it works…

This soft, silky and smooth product should be applied after your foundation and concealer are on. Laura Mercier has a powder puff you can use for application, but I found that method was messy for me and resulted in too much powder on my face. A little goes a long way! I prefer to use a kabuki brush and push it into the powder. Then, I tap the brush several times until I see a small amount is left on the brush and I gently brush the powder into my face. I also use a smaller brush and apply it to my eyelids to set eye makeup. It’s particularly great at preventing your eye makeup from creasing. I use it year round, especially when I have a fancy night out or event and want to ensure my makeup stays put all night long.

I recommend Laura Mercier’s Translucent Loose Setting Powder for people with combination or oily skin and to anyone who prefers a matte finish on their makeup. This powder will only enhance a matte foundation. And, like I said, if you’re trying to avoid that “makeup falling of your face in the middle of July” you need to consider trying this stuff out.

Have you used this setting powder or something similar? I’d love to hear, what you use during the summer, how much you like it and how you wear it.

Happy Monday & Cheers!

Sarah Camille
