5 Summer Skincare Tips for Healthy, Nourished Skin

5 Simple Skincare Tips for Healthy Summer Skin

Hi friends! I am back from our beach weekend with the summer skincare tips I have learned over the years to maintain and achieve healthy, nourished skin. Summer is the time to show some skin and bring out your swimsuits, shorts and tank tops. With all the extra skin we show in the summer, our skin can turn into our best or worse accessory. A cute summer tank with shorts does not look as attractive if your skin is dried out and neglected.

I know from experience and I have made some mistakes when it comes to my skincare routine and products. So, today I am sharing the five simple ways I take care of my skin and maintain a youthful glow during the summer.

Summer Skincare Tips

#1 – Switch to Organic Skincare

I recently started making the switch to organic skincare, and have already seen what a difference good quality, natural products makes. When it comes to skincare, you get what you pay for. Cheap, generic skincare products that are readily available at the drugstore are usually full of inexpensive chemicals that do nothing to nourish your skin at best, or can outright damage your skin at worst.

With organic skincare, you can rest easy knowing the products you put on your skin will gently nourish and nurture your skin, making it healthy, soft and supple—perfect for flaunting at the beach!

For healthy, glowing, summer-ready skin, organic beauty products from a reputable brand, like Well Within Beauty can transform your skin. Well Within Beauty offers a huge range of essential skincare products made from the finest natural and organic ingredients. Their selection includes makeup remover, cleansers and an eye firming serum.

#2 – Moisturize Daily

Warmer days and increased sun exposure can wreak havoc on your skin and cause your oil glands to go into overdrive. You may experience oilier skin during the summer, which may tempt you to skip using moisturizer. Don’t do that! Just because your skin is oily does not mean it is properly moisturized. In fact, keeping your skin adequately hydrated actually helps to manage your natural oil production.

The key is to find a lightweight moisturizer that feels comfortable on your skin during the hot summer months. As I have mentioned before, I use almond oil year-round. It feels light, absorbs really quickly and it works wonders on my skin. If using a moisturizing oil doesn’t suit you, avoid thick creams and lotions that can make your skin feel smothered and sweaty in the summer and go for a gel moisturizer. You can also try pat on multiple layers of a hydrating toner.

#3 – Nourish Your Skin from Within

What you put into your body affects the condition of your skin just as much as what you put on it. Nourish your skin from within by taking nutritional supplements, which Well Within Beauty also offers. Supplements packed with essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants protect your skin cells from free radical damage and boost skin cell renewal for a healthy, youthful glow.

Eating fruits and vegetables is great way to nourish your skin as well. Tomatoes are one of my favorite things to eat for my skin, especially in the summer. There is lycopene in tomatoes, which provides natural skin protection by defending your skin from UV radiation. Studies also show that the ingredients in tomatoes help delay wrinkling and keep your skin looking young.

#4 – Exfoliate Gently

Regular exfoliation helps your skin shed dead cells faster, revealing fresh new radiant skin underneath. For a youthful summer glow, exfoliate regularly with a gentle yet effective chemical exfoliator, with AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) or BHA (beta hydroxy acid). About three times a week, I use Dr. Brandt’s Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant, which has AHA, jojoba oil, aloe vera and a few other magical ingredients!

Stay away from harsh physical scrubs that can rub your skin raw and cause it to become sensitized or reactive. Treat your skin like you would a newborn baby—with tender, loving care instead of rough scrubbing and rubbing. A lot of facial and body scrubs contain overly harsh physical exfoliators like crushed walnut shells that can damage your skin, or microbeads that are harmful to the environment when washed off.

#5 – Never Skip Sunscreen

My last tip is kind of a no-brainer. You should never, ever skip sunscreen during the summer when the sun’s rays are strongest. You should actually wear sunscreen every day, no matter what the weather, because the sun’s UV rays are so powerful that they can penetrate through clouds, glass and windows. Sun protection is especially important during the summer when people tend to wear lighter clothes that expose more skin.

So far this summer, my favorite sunscreen is by COOLA. I use the one pictured above on my face. It has a smooth non-greasy feeling and a lovely, light tea scent. Be sure to choose a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection and an SPF of at least 30, and wear enough of it to cover all exposed areas of your face and body.  On work days, when I’m not directly in the sun, I use my go-to tinted moisturizer, which is SPF 20.

A Nighttime Shower Routine That’s Good for your Soul & Skin

After a long, exhausting day, there is nothing that relaxes me more than a hot shower or bath. A good shower transforms my bathroom into a relaxing escape from the world,  and it also gives me some much-needed time to reflect and take care of myself. Personally, I always find it interesting to hear how often people do certain self-care tasks, like shaving legs or exfoliating. So, today I thought I would share with you all my nighttime shower routine – good for your soul and skin. Now, let’s dive in to the details.

A Nighttime Shower Routine that’s Good for your Soul & Skin - SCsScoop.com

Steps for my Nighttime Shower Routine

#1 Set the Mood

Listening to music while I shower or bathe, is always a must. Recently, my go-to songs are by Anderson East and James Bay. If you are looking for some soothing and relaxing music, I  recommend checking them out. The other crucial thing I do to set the mood for my shower is light a candle. A nice, aromatic candle just has a way of making a shower feel more spa-like. I use the waterproof bluetooth shower speaker below with my phone all the time and the battery lasts a really long time!

#2 Exfoliate

For me, exfoliating comes in two categories: my body and my face. I exfoliate my face two or three times a week with Dr. Brandt’s Age Defying Microdermabrasion Exfoliator. I got this stuff in last year’s spring FabFitFun box, and it has been the best facial exfoliator I have ever tried. I really feel like it gets the dead skin cells off my face, and it leaves my skin feeling so smooth.I exfoliate my body with Origins Shower Off Exfoliating Body Wash with Hawaiian Mineral Water. When it comes to my nighttime shower routine, this stuff is my current favorite product . As an exfoliating body wash, it has a lovely scent and does an amazing job scrubbing away dead skin cells. The best part is it makes any lotions or almond oil I apply after my shower much more effective.

#3 Wash

I always wash after I exfoliate. I learned this trick a few years ago. If you have ever questioned the order in which to wash and exfoliate, check out this article on why exfoliating first is better for your skin. My current favorite body wash is SheaMoisture’s Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Energizing Body Wash. It is a great value, really effective skin moisturizer, it smells so good and to top it off, it doubles as bubble bath!

#4 Shave

I shave my underarms daily and my legs about three times each week (dependent on the weather and what I’m wearing, ha!). I use Venus Sensitive Disposable Razors, and for shaving cream I use Venus with Olay Ultra Moisture Shave Gel in the Vanilla Cashmere scent. For you guys, Harry’s makes great razors where you can even subscribe and receive brand new blades shipped right to your door.

I decided to leave washing my hair and my hair care for a future post, since that includes enough details on its own.  If you would like the scoop on my hair care routine, let me know in the comments. Then, I’ll be sure to share it with you soon.

Do you shower at night like me or in the morning? What is your nighttime shower routine like? Do you have any particular shower products you love or is there something that makes your shower time extra relaxing? I would love to know if you guys have any go-to music for relaxing, too.

Cheers!

How to Keep Skin Moisturized All Winter Long

As soon as winter’s dry, cold air sets in my skin knows exactly what to do! If I do not take proper care of my skin, it gets extra dry and even starts peeling. It is not pretty! Now, that is what happens if I don’t do anything to prevent this terrible reaction from occurring. So without further ado, here are the key ingredients to keep skin moisturized all winter.

Key Ingredients to Keep Skin Moisturized

Keep Skin Moisturized All Winter Long - Almond Oil - SCsScoop.com

#1 Almond Oil – I talked about this stuff in one of my first blog posts. Eighteen months later and I am still using it all over my body.  I cannot say enough good things about Almond oil. It is super affordable, soothes dry skin instantly, diminishes fine lines and reduces dark circles under your eyes, all without causing breakouts)! Before you try one of the many expensive oil-based products out there, try this stuff.

Keep Skin Moisturized All Winter Long - Humidifier - SCsScoop.com

#2 Humidifier – The dry heat that comes from heating your home can be a big cause of dry skin in the winter. Personally, I put off getting a humidifier for a long time because I did not think it would make much of a difference. But, I was so wrong! With all the time we spend indoors, humidifiers are a worthwhile purchase to keep skin moisturized in the winter. I have noticed a major difference with my skin since getting one.

Keep Skin Moisturized All Winter Long - Tervis Water Bottle - SCsScoop.com

#3 Water Bottle – If you are not carrying a watter bottle in the winter, you are doing it all wrong! Skin is our largest organ. So, if you are dehydrated, skin is one of the first things you will see effected. Sure, you should drink plenty of water every day, all yearlong, but this is a crucial step to maintain well moisturized skin. My advice – opt for a cute water bottle because you will be much more likely to bring it along throughout your day.

Keep Skin Moisturized All Winter Long - Ahava Hand Cream - SCsScoop.com

#4 Hand Cream – Similar to our faces, our hands get a lot of exposure to cold, dry air in the winter. My hands get dry quickly if I do not use a good quality hand creme. I keep some at my desk to put on while I read e-mails. Lately, I have been using a new hand cream I got in my winter FabFitFun box. It has a lovely light scent, absorbs quickly and doesn’t make my hands feel greasy. What more do we need, right!?

Keep Skin Moisturized All Winter Long - Burt's Bees Chapstick - SCsScoop.com

#5 Chapstick – This is a no-brainer, right!? Chapped lips in can quickly turn into cracked lips in the winter.  To prevent that, I get a couple extra chapsticks – one for my desk, one for my car and one for my purse. Burt’s Bees Coconut & Pear is currently my favorite chapstick. It’s super creamy, smells great and has good staying power.

In addition to the key ingredients above, keep in mind that a healthy diet and vitamins can also drastically improve the appearance and health of your skin.

Recently, I have thought about taking collagen supplements for better skin and hair in preparation for my wedding. Have you tried those or do you take them now? I would love to hear your opinions, if so!

I would also love to know if you have any tips or tricks that have improved your skin. Do you use similar products to keep skin moisturized during winter’s wrath? What is your winter skin care routine? Share in the comment section and let’s discuss.

Cheers!

Sarah Camille
