“If your hair is done and you’re wearing good shoes you can get away with anything.” – Iris Apel

The Scoop on Formulate

How it works

The first step to get “good hair day” status is to take Formulate’s quiz. The quiz is where customization begins! It is your opportunity to share your hair type, needs and improvements you would like to see with your hair. Formulate’s quiz touches on every detail from length and color to strength and hydration needs. The last step of the quiz is picking out the scent – probably the hardest part for me because there were so many awesome choices! Once the quiz is done, your Formulate profile is complete. Here’s what mine looks like.

If you want to see what the possibilities are for your hair in the hands of Formulate, take their quiz

Hello.. Good Hair Day? Is that you?

Formulate arrived in the mail after a few days. The packaging is sleek, simple and functional. The pump is a game changer as well! The first time I tried Formulate, something was off with the formula. I was one of the first people to try the product so I wasn’t shocked. What surprised though, was the Formulate team. They genuinely wanted to help me find the right formula.

My hair is very fine, color-treated and I have several hair goals. I guess you could call me a little high maintenance! But despite of that, Formulate kept working with me until I got the right formula. And let me tell you, my good hair days are no longer rare occurrences!

The Pros

Just as they did with me, the Formulate team promises to work with you to adjust your ingredients and ship you the new formula – free of charge. Customer service is everything and I can confidently tell you Formulate is top notch on that front!

Before using Formulate, my scalp was oily and I was constantly battling build-up of dry shampoo – one of my favorite hair care products! I also had heat damage on the ends of my hair, resulting in lots of split ends. Thankfully, I no longer have those problems with my customized shampoo and conditioner.

My hair is the healthiest it has been is several years. It is stronger, more hydrated, less frizzy and my hair color “stays” longer. My scalp is healthier, too. My nighttime routine of washing my hair twice a week is the same, but I am using less dry shampoo, which ultimately means more money in the bank!

In addition to helping me meet my hair goals and achieve “good hair day” status, one of my favorite things about Formulate is that it is good for the environment. Their cruelty-free formula doesn’t contain preservatives, sulfates or parabens that can be harmful our planet Earth. The formula also contains less water than most shampoos and conditioners.

The Cons

You have to stay committed to Formulate and be patient to get see the full result. It can take a few times for your hair to fully let go of the old products you were using.  Since I only wash my hair two times a week, it took me a while, plus I didn’t get the best formula for me right away.

The price of for their customized shampoo and conditioner is also a little high for me, at $39 for the pair. However, now that I am spending less money on dry shampoo and have seen improvement in my hair, I can say it is definitely worth the price!

Bring on the Good Hair Days!

I am SO glad I stuck with Formulate and found a customized formula that fits my hair needs. It really has been a game-changer!

My Easy & Natural Everyday Makeup Routine

img_2669

Hello friends! I know it’s been a little while, but I have good news — it is confession time! Today I am sharing the products and details behind my easy, natural everyday makeup routine. These are the products I have emptied, used for years, and continue to go through super quickly. For me putting on makeup is an important part of my self-care, but on a typical day I like to opt for a pretty natural look that takes less than 10 minutes tops.

In order to show you the full impact of my everyday makeup routine, I feel like it is necessary to show you guys what I look like without any makeup.

So, here is my au-natural face.

Now, here are the products behind my everyday makeup routine!

Laura Mercier Foundation Primer – Oil Free

• Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 – Oil Free, Nude

• Cargo HD Picture Perfect Bronzing Powder

• Laura Mercier Eyelid Primer, Flax

L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara

Lorac Alter Ego Lip Gloss, Flower Child

Before applying any makeup, I always wash my face and moisturize (I’ll save my morning skincare/pre-makeup  routine for another post!). Then, the first thing I apply is primer. I love how light this primer is and it really helps my tinted moisturizer go on easily and evenly. Both the Laura Mercier primer and tinted moisturizer last about 9 months for me because a pea-sized amount of product is all you need.

I love that this tinted moisturizer cancels out any redness and evens out my skin tone, while still letting my freckles peek through. With a beauty blender, I place an extra dab of tinted moisturizer under my eyes instead of fooling with a concealer. This method makes the skin a little brighter without feeling heavy or getting cake-y. I think it looks pretty natural!

To give my face a little color and dimension, I brush the CARGO bronzing powder just below my cheeks and sweep it up around my temples and the corners of my forehead. A little bit of this bronzer goes a long way, and it is great for anyone with a fair to medium complexion.

The eyelid primer I use acts like a concealer for the skin above your eyes, and it’s seriously one of my all-time favorite makeup products. You can use it on its own, like I do most days, or use it as a priming base for eyeshadow to go on smoothly. My eyelid skin tends to get a little red, so I love using this primer to conceal it. The flax shade perfectly counteracts any redness.

If I had to pick a single makeup product to live with for the rest of my life, I would pick mascara. I have blonde eyelashes, so I have always felt like mascara totally transforms my face. As a self-proclaimed mascara junkie, I have tried a wide-range of mascaras. But the L’Oreal voluminous waterproof mascara is the one I always go back to for my everyday makeup routine. I love how sturdy the wand is, and the mascara has the right balance of lengthening and thickening power. It never clumps! Some days I use eyeliner to give my eyes an extra pop, too.

Lip gloss is always the final touch to apply as I am walking out the door (or when I’m sitting in that good ‘ole DC traffic!). Lorac’s Alter Ego lip glosses have a really nice texture, and most importantly they aren’t sticky. The amount of pigment is also just right. I have been loving the flower child shade, as it gives a nice punch of color to my otherwise neutral everyday makeup look.

Shop my everyday makeup essentials!

So there you have it. Overall, I think my (not exactly) everyday makeup routine is pretty quick, easy and natural looking. For a regular day, I like a makeup routine that leaves me feeling like an enhanced version of myself. But, I would love to hear what your everyday makeup routine entails.

Do you have a natural, everyday makeup routine? How often do you wear makeup? Are you a tinted moisturizer girl like me or do you prefer a more full-coverage makeup look? I am curious if you consider applying makeup as part of your self-care routine as well. Share your thoughts in the comments so we can chat.

Cheers!

Nailing a Gel Manicure at Home with Pink Gellac

Nail your Gel Manicure at Home with Pink Gellac - Pink Gellac Review - SCsScoop.com

Hello friends! I have shared my love for a good manicure many times, so I am super excited to share a line of gel manicure products with you all today. These products are from the European company Pink Gellac, and they have all the tools and nail polishes you need to get a gel manicure at home. Let’s dive in!

Nail your Gel Manicure at Home with Pink Gellac - Pink Gellac Review - SCsScoop.com

I tried out Pink Gellac’s starter kit, which retails for $99 and is currently on sale for $50. The kit, pictured above, includes:

  • 1 Pink Gellac LED Lamp
  • 1 Primer
  • 1 Nail Polish in the color Dynamic Pink
  • 1 Pink Gellac Base2
  • 1 Pink Gellac Ultra Shine 15ml
  • 4 Online courses
  • 1 Nail file 240-180 grid
  • 1 Orange Woodsticks
  • 10 Cleaner pockets
  • 10 Remover pockets

Nailing a Gel Manicure at Home

With the Pink Gellac starter kit, I found the process quite easy from beginning to end. First, I started with the remover pockets to see how they would work on removing the gel polish I got at a salon. I have tried removing gel polish with other products at home, and was skeptical about these pockets. Am I the only one who has majorly struggled to get a gel manicure off at home!? Well, these remover pockets worked like magic. I inserted them and wrapped them around my fingers, waited 10 minutes and all the polish just slid right off.

With my old gel polish off, I trimmed my nails and got my cuticles in order. Then, I used the cleaner pockets to wipe off my nails and create a nice, clean slate for new gel polish. With Pink Gellac, the application was super easy for the primer, base, color and shine. The brush is sturdy and has a nice curved edge, so it forms to your nails and applys the polish really well.

The Pros

Simply put, Pink Gellac’s polish colors are great quality — they are not opaque and after just one coat it looked amazing. There is also a large range of colors, many of which are sold on Amazon, if you aren’t ready to try the whole starter kit. In comparison to other gel manicures (at home and at salons), Pink Gellac’s polish stays on quite well. I am quite hard on my nails, but one week into my gel manicure and there are just two little knicks near the tips of my nails.

The other great thing about Pink Gellac are the remover pockets! Damage from removing gel manicures can make your nails really weak. These pockets seriously work like magic though! Lastly, there is one general positive to doing gel manicures at home — the cost savings. In the D.C. area gel manicures can easily cost $45 (without tip). So, investing in something like Pink Gellac, can literally pay for itself with a couple uses.

The Cons

The only negative I found for the Pink Gellac starter kit was the size of the LED lamp. I had to be pretty careful not to hit the sides of the lamp, so a slightly larger lamp would be nice. Aside from that, I do not see any cons with the Pink Gellac products. That said, nailing a gel manicure at home may prove challenging or frustrating for some.

If doing your own gel manicure is new to you or seems scary, Pink Gellac has online courses that come with the starter kit to help you out. You can also take a look at my tips for nailing a manicure at home, which are good for traditional nail polish or gel nail polish. I also have a little advice: have fun practicing and know that it is ok to mess up. It is just nail polish and the worst case scenario is you have to take your polish off and start over.

What do you think?

Do you give yourself manicures at home? Have you tried a gel manicure at home recently? I have always found doing my nails to be a relaxing activity at the end of a long day, and it feels good to do a little something for myself. Is that just me? How does an at home manicure make you feel?

I would love to hear from you! And many thanks to Pink Gellac for sending me the starter kit to try out.

Cheers!
