Getting New Floors & Our Home Remodel

Getting New Floors & Our Home Remodel -

Hi friends! If you have been following me on Instagram, then you already know that we have new floors. We have renovated, remodeled and done some general sprucing up at home for the past couple months. The bulk of work has taken place in the past 6 weeks, and while we still have a ways to go, today I am sharing an update on the home remodel. I’ll share the work we had done, what we did ourselves, how long it took, what went well and what went wrong. If you’re thinking about remodeling your home, I hope hearing our experience will give you some insight and confidence.

Getting New Floors

At the beginning of this year, we decided it was time to rip up our old carpet and 70s-style kitchen tile and replace it with something more modern that would add value to our home. We researched some different options, visited a few different places and ultimately decided to put down luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout 90% of our condo. The new floor now runs from the entry way into our dining room, living room, kitchen, hallway, guest bedroom, master bedroom and master bathroom. We chose luxury vinyl plank flooring from Floor & Decor for a couple reasons:

  1. It’s 100% waterproof. We wanted to update the tile in our kitchen and master bathroom, so with this flooring we could seamlessly run it throughout our home.
  2. It has texture and grains to it so it looks like wood.
  3. The price was right. Our condo is not our forever home so paying top-dollar did not make sense.

The process of getting the new flooring laid out felt long, but in hindsight it was pretty quick. We boxed all the small things up the weekend before the work began. From start to finish, putting down the new flooring took four days. It probably would have been less time, but we encountered a big leak from the wet-bar that was removed. It was a mess to say the least!

How We Cut Costs

While we started saving for the new flooring last year, we identified some extra ways to save money when we started researching and planning the process of laying down new floors. To cut costs, we opted to do some work ourselves. We removed all the tile in the kitchen and bathroom ourselves. Honestly, it was not something I would have been able to do without Will, even though I did pitch in. We did all this work on the weekends, starting about a month out. The dust from removing the tile was a little crazy, but thankfully we focused on the master bathroom first and just shut the door!

Additional Updates

Getting the new floors was definitely the biggest part of our remodel project, but we made a few additional updates to our home. I painted the entryway, dining room and living room. I opted for a brighter white than the creamy version we had in the hallway. It was Benjamin Moore’s Simple White. For the dining room and living room, I chose Benjamin Moore’s Summer Shower, which is a light, peaceful blue.

  • Removed the wet-bar in our dining room which was blocking light into the kitchen.
  • We widened the entry to the kitchen by cutting into the wall.
  • Got a new rug for our living room
  • Got a lighter slipcover for our IKEA couch
  • Got new storage for our kitchen and a new rug

Before and “After” Home Remodel

Since we didn’t take a lot of photos before the remodel, my Instagram Story photos and photos with Maddie and Maple are the best I have to show you our old tile and carpet and a look at our old living room.

The “after” photos above are really just where we are currently. I want to update the artwork in our living room. We still have things to finish this summer too, including finishing the new shelves/storage in our master bathroom, finishing our laundry area, selling some old pieces on Craigslist, painting the kitchen in Simple White and getting a rug for my office.

Moving forward, I’ll share updates on each room and any new home decor as it gets completed. If you’ve recently remodeled your home or gotten new floors, I would love to hear about it. And, if you are looking into a similar home project, I’m happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Learning to Bloom Where You are Planted

Spring is in full force, and each year it makes me think about personal growth and change. This year in particular I have been reflecting about what it means to bloom where you are planted. To me, learning to bloom where you are planted means learning to come into your own, maintain confidence in who you and find peace with exactly where you are in the current season of life. Today, I want to share with you a few of my latest revelations in hopes that they encourage you to BLOOM!

What to do when you are not where you want to be.

Life is full of ups and downs, and often times God plants us in a place where, frankly we do not want to be planted! When I was fired a few years ago, I was really upset. It was not part of my plan. So what do we do in those situations, when we are pushed in a direction that we don’t want to go?

Stop asking, “Why me?”

Of course, I asked that initially! I felt very confused and blindsided in the moment. But now, in retrospect, there were signs that I missed. After a week or so, I learned to consciously stop focusing on a question I would never get the answer to. I had to learn to accept what happened, even if I was still upset about it.

Focus on the lessons.

Getting fired taught me a lot of things about my work ethic. Most importantly, it taught me that my work does not define me. It was a catalyst that allowed me to find confidence in my skills and to speak up when something was wrong.

I am a firm believer that life is full of lessons, and these lessons should be shared (hence this blog post!). Even when we are planted in a place we do not want to be, there are lessons to learn about ourselves and the people around us. We just have to look for them and open our eyes and hearts to fully understand them.

Don’t compare yourself to others.

We all know comparison is the thief of joy, but more important than that is remembering that we all have completely different lives. We are unique – through our circumstances, our personalities, our struggles, our weaknesses and our strengths. Some people may have one part of their life in full bloom, while the other part is in disarray. Comparing ourselves to others steals our time and kills our joy. There is no way we can truly bloom when we are comparing ourselves to others. It steals our time and kills our joy. But, if we focus on the good things within us and around us, then we can come into our own and reach a new level of confidence.

Look for a silver lining.

Sure, I was really upset for a couple days. But, I decided to focus on the good that could come out of the situation. I had time to think about what I wanted out of my career, and I had time to do a fun DIY project for our patio that I had continually put off. I took advantage of the time I had at home and I focused on my relationship with Will. For me, the silver lining was that being fired gave me the gift of time.

Now, I have to acknowledge that with some situations, it is much harder to find a silver lining or there appears to be no silver lining. Those are situations when the unthinkable happens, when it feels like we are incapable of ever blooming again.

I had a time in my life when I felt like that. It is something I plan to open up more about soon. But for now, I will say what got me through it was my determination to not have my life defined by that situation. It was not easy at first, but I focused on the good qualities within myself and the good things happening around me.

“Perhaps the reason you are drawn to flowers is not only for their outer beauty, but because they remind you: beautiful things will bloom after the longest seasons of waiting.” – Morgan Harpers Nichols

If you are struggling in the season of life you are in or feeling confused why part of your life is not blooming, do not beat yourself up. Find peace that you have been planted exactly where you are supposed to be. Remember you are strong. You are capable of blooming. And often times, the most beautiful blooms come after the heavies storms.

2019 FabFitFun Spring Box sneak peek and customization -

Hello friends! Today, I am sharing a FabFitFun Spring Box Sneak-Peek. This is an insider’s look at the customization process for annual members and the product options for this season’s FabFitFun box. I have talked a lot about this subscription box, and while I love to share what’s inside my boxes after I arrive, I thought I would switch things up for you. But before we dive in, let me give you some background information on the subscription box options with FabFitFun.

The Scoop on FabFitFun

FabFitFun sends its members a box each season with a mix of beauty, wellness and fashion products, many of which are fun practical, fun pieces that fit the season we’re entering. Boxes are sent in March, June, September and December.

There are two membership options – annual and seasonal. With the annual subscription you pay $179.99 upfront for your first four boxes. That’s $45 for each box. Annual subscribers also get early shipping and the perk of picking out all the contents of their FabFitFun box.

Seasonal members can only pick a few items out and everything else is random. With a seasonal membership you pay $49.99 per box and you are billed per season. You can opt-out whenever you’d like.

In addition to the box and all its contents, all FabFitFun members get access to beauty tips, workout videos and coupon codes for the box’s featured brands.

The Customization Process & the Products

I chose the annual membership because I really like the customization options, and I just love this subscription box in general. The quality of the products is amazing and the value of the whole box always has me in awe. I could easily buy one or two products for the same price as the box.

Before each season, I get an email detailing the FabFitFun schedule and when customization will open. It’s always exciting to see the product options and pick out what will go in your box.

Here is what the customization process looked like for the spring box. I just went through each of these and chose what I liked best. The options I chose are in bold too!
