I KNOW. We still have a solid month before it’s fall, but the transition from summer to fall is one of my favorite times of the year. There is always a bitter sweetness I feel when the end of summer nears. I hate seeing less and less sunshine each day, but the anticipation of fall always brings me such joy. Fall has always been my favorite season, so it’s no surprise that I get most excited about fall outfits. So, today I’m kicking off a new fall style series and sharing three easy steps to style fall outfits from your summer outfits.
Too often, I feel like style advice or fashion inspiration becomes too complicated and involves way too many pieces of clothing. In reality, you can actually be more stylish when you implement a dose of simplicity — and that’s what the steps below are all about!
Before we dive into the steps to create a fall outfit. Here’s a look at the summer outfit that will serve as the basis of this little transformation. By the way – my striped tee is only $8 and my shorts are currently 25% off!

The Easy Way to Create Fall Outfits
Step One: Swap your shorts for jeans.
I found a very flattering pair of high-waisted skinny jeans from Madewell, pictured below, that I can’t wait to wear non-stop this fall. They are more affordable compared to the designer jeans I always gravitate towards. Plus, they have a way of sucking you in without feeling uncomfortable and they don’t stretch out. For sizing, I went with my normal size.
Note: If you’re a skirt lover, simply swap out your summer skirt for a longer, thicker option. This should be easy, since midi skirts are on trend right now!
Step Two: Swap your sandals for booties.
Booties might just be my number one must-have for fall. The light taupe pair I am wearing are an even prettier color in person, and I just found out they’re currently 25% off. If you live in the south, try peep toe booties for early fall. I also recommend investing in a lighter pair and a darker pair of booties, so you have options.
With just the first two steps complete, you’ll have an easy outfit for cool, late summer nights and during the day in early fall. Take a look . . . !

Step Three: Add an outer layer. Choose a cardigan or jacket — it’s up to you!
Layers are a given for transitioning into fall and handling the cooler temps. A cardigan and lightweight jacket will serve you well! I’ll share more about cardigans later on in my fall style series, but today I’m showing you the final transformation with my new surplus cotton jacket.
Just take a look below, and you will see why I already love it, right?! Olive is a great color to incorporate in any fall wardrobe and I love how this shade is a little more subdued than most. The medium weight of the jacket is great for fall, and there are ties at the waist that will flatter every body. I like that the jacket is not too flimsy like some other cotton field jackets out there.

Bonus step: Add a scarf!
Scarves are a girl’s best friend, at least they are for me! If you want to take your fall outfits to the next level, adding a scarf is the way to go.
I’ve always felt like they are the cherry-on-top accessory for fall. Scarves always work perfectly on top of a jacket and cardigan as the temperatures continue to drop. I recommend having a neutral scarf and a more colorful option that will pop when paired with a neutral outfit. Here are a couple scarves I love, at different price points:
I hope this first part of my fall style series, helps you feel excited about ways to easily create simple and stylish fall outfits. I can’t wait to share more fall style inspiration with you all, so stay tuned for a new post each week.
Cheers!
