Hi friends! I know it has been a minute since I’ve posted. Life has been a little nutty lately, but I’m excited to share with you all some style inspiration for one of my all-time favorite fall pieces — sweaters! If you’re like me, it’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed or bombarded with too many clothing options. Sweaters are a personal weakness for me, so I recently came up with a list of must-have sweaters to keep myself from buying sweaters I don’t need and to figure out where my sweater collection was lacking. Today I am going to share that list in case any of you are in a similar predicament! I will also share a little more about my thought process for being more mindful about the clothes I buy. So if sweaters aren’t your weakness and something else is, hopefully you will still find this helpful!
Must-Have Sweaters
Classic Cashmere Turtleneck Tunic
This is a timeless style that will work year after year for many falls and winters to come. Because of that, I think you can easily justify spending a little more on sweaters like this. I have the one pictured above and it is amazing quality, soft, drapes beautifully and has the perfect oversized fit (not too big or overwhelming). If you are my height (5’8″) or taller I would size up to wear it with leggings. If you are looking for a more budget-friendly, similar option, check out this one.
Cropped Sweater
This style of sweater is definitely more of a trend right now, but I love how they look with high waisted jeans, skirts and jumpsuits. See below for how I recently wore the one pictured above. I got my normal size and it has enough length that I can tuck it in, but it also looks cute untucked. I am a fan of tucking, so for this trend finding a sweater that isn’t too cropped is key.
Button Down Cardigan
This style of sweater can work as a pretty top on its own if it is fitted enough or work really well with layering. I have yet to get a sweater like this, but have been on the hunt. I am debating between the one above and this one.
Zip-Up Sweater
This trend is similar to the collared sweaters, so you may want to pick one if you are just trying it out for the first time. To me the big difference is how well these work layering over slim layering tees or turtlenecks. I wear mine with joggers or flares and a turtleneck to work. The one I have is a great price but the cream color keeps selling out. There are lots of similar options out there, but this one would be my second pick.
Classic Crewneck Sweater
Of course, you can’t go wrong with a classic crewneck sweater. I love styling them under vests in the fall or wearing to work with a long pendant necklace. The one above is super cozy and the bright red is a fun pop of color! It comes in many more color options too. Here’s another cozy and affordable option in a pretty olive green.
Long Cardigan
Wearing a long cardigan is an easy way to give your body some length as you layer your clothes. The ribbed one above is a great, affordable staple that comes in lots of colors.
Collared Sweater
Collared sweaters are having a moment and I am really hoping that they just stick around forever. I’m convinced they are flattering on everyone. I own the one above and has the perfect amount of extra room in my normal size. It also comes in more colors! Here’s a great under $30 option too.
A FUN Sweater
Whether you like a fun pattern, texture, sleeves, neckline or something else, having a fun sweater or two in your wardrobe is an easy way to elevate the neutral basics you already own.
Sweater Blazer
If you’ve been following me, you already know about my love affair with my sweater blazer. They are seriously the best of both worlds — cozy and put together. I have one similar to the one above and I have worn if for several spring and falls. The brown one above is gorgeous and on my list. There’s also a very similar one without a button.

Figuring out your own style must-haves
When going through this exercise, I realized the process of determining must-have sweaters can easily be replicated for other elements of your wardrobe. It comes down to the through process, and for me I am trying to be more intentional about utilizing the pieces I have in my wardrobe and smarter about the clothes I keep. Thinking about the variety of styles and colors that I have for certain pieces feels like such a game changer. If I was Oprah, I’d call it a lightbulb moment. So, needless to say, this may be the first of more must-have posts!
In the meantime, I definitely have some pairing down and cleaning out of my wardrobe that I need to do (and am planning to do) soon and part of that is taking inventory of what I own. There is some maintenance that comes with our wardrobes, and speaking form experience, I think it can be easy to overlook that, forget what’s in your wardrobe and make an impulse purchase… is it just me!?
